Hatch Season Begins on the Islands!
Hatchling entering the Gulf of Mexico early in the morning in 2010 (Photo by: A. Bryant).
Last night the first loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) nests laid on Sanibel & Captiva hatched and the hatchlings made their way to the Gulf of Mexico!
Great news. Is there a way to follow a particular nest? There are a few that I would like to follow as they were deposited where I got married in November. I also monitored sea turtle nests in Pinellas county for a couple of years as well as being involved in turtle rehab for 14 years.
We begin posting information about nests as they hatch to our website- www.sccf.org. We try to do this twice a month, but during the busiest part of the season, that doesn't always happen! If you have a question about a specific nest and there's no information on our website yet, you can e-mail the sea turtle program at seaturtle@sccf.org.
Thanks for the info, wasn't sure if it was posted on the blog or the website as there is minimal info on the website at this time. I remember when I monitored nests I had to update everything daily. Lucky team there.

ReplyDeleteWas it nest number 1 on Captiva?? I rode with Tim the day it was predicted to hatch and it didn't. Keep us posted on Ridley Nest
ReplyDeleteYes, one of the nests that hatched was nest #1 on Captiva. We're still waiting on the Kemp's ridley nest!
